about

Musicians have been hit particularly hard by the COVID19 shutdown and appear to be the last to benefit when things start to reopen, but the local indie rock band The Deep Roots has made good use of the time.

“Surprisingly, we have been more productive since the social distancing started,” said guitarist Ryan Kerr.

The band’s weekly rehearsals, known as “therapy,” have been canceled until life returns to normal, but each band member has a small home studio where they can record and share files via DropBox.

“We set up DropBox about six months ago because we are all busy with jobs and family. There is only so much you can accomplish during a once a week practice. We were able to switch into virtual mode instantly. Since we can’t go anywhere, we’ve all had more time to work on music,” guitarist Mark Sullivan said.

The Deep Roots released their debut EP, “Therapy Sessions,” last May. With an underage drummer, their gigs have mainly been at community events and fundraisers. Without gigs to prepare for, the band has focused on their own material, which they say is enough for two full albums.

“We are hoping to finish up our first album soon and get that released. In the meantime, we wanted to release a single or two to start the ball rolling,” Sullivan said.
